Remember my calories in vs. calories out post? Here are the calories out components and how much they contribute towards your total daily energy expenditure adapted from Maclean (2011). – I really quickly want to preface this by saying that these percentages are probably more of a range than a uniform number for all people since everyone makes different dietary and exercise choices. Nevertheless you get a solid idea of what goes into burning calories. – First thing that should pop out at your is how NEAT and exercise make up a fairly small portion of your overall energy expenditure. – How is this possible? Is exercising a waste of time then? Is this why my weight loss progress has stalled even though Ive ran everyday this January because #NewYearNewMe? – No!! Exercise is so important. It still definitely helps burn calories but more importantly it helps your hormones that signal hunger levels. Also resistance exercise helps build and retain lean body mass which will boost your BMR. It strengthens your body to improve posture. It releases endorphins and lowers stress. – Exercise is wildly important and will massively contribute to your dieting success but!
